Monthly fee shouldn't be more then $10 a month, especially with all the subscribers WoW has.

I really haven't even heard of your problem.
Among the MMORPG community, WoW is frowned upon for being
so easy. I recently moved into Vanguard, and I've also frequented City of Villains/Heroes, and both are much harder than WoW, and far less forgiving (for example, both have experience loss upon death).
Not only that, leveling up is much more difficult, and grouping is a must. But grouping has to be flawless, for if every team member doesn't play his part perfectly, the group
is going to wipe, and people will lose experience, and durability (which is a much larger issue in Vanguard than it is in WoW).
However, you are right to bring up the point that WoW is time consuming. At the later levels, skill is more of a virtue, but on the 1-50 grind, it's all about just putting your time in. That's not to say it's not fun, it's absolutely a blast to hang out in a Ventrilo server and mess around, but that might not be for everyone.
For your comment on monthly fees, I think that's subjective. For a while, I was paying for both WoW and City of Villains, and that rounded up at $40 a month, and I was fine with it. I'm not well off, but I think it's really worth it.
Simply doing the math for WoW, I got my money's worth.
Consider a normal game costs $60, and you get 12 hours play from it. That's $10 for 2 hours.
For WoW, it's around $40 to buy it. I won't get into business economics, but that value soon gets nulled by 'economies of scale' (means, I'm spreading that $40 over so many months, it's not much). Then, I'm paying $20 a month (Canadian). If I was playing probably 15 hours a week, for only $20 a month, it's worth it. If you're going to let it rot on your shelf though, I can see the complaint.
It's not for everyone, but I found it a great introduction into professional MMORPG's in general (breaking from the Tibia's, and the RPGWO's, which is actually a fantastic game).
