Freelancer (2003)

Man, I love Freelancer.

For those who don't know, in Freelancer you play as a freelance pilot (clue's in the title, eh?) in a new part of the galaxy extablished by sleeper ships who were dispatched from earth after a huge civil war.
The player character is Edison Trent, a recent arrival on Manhattan, the capital of Liberty, after the space station he was on (Freeport 7, in the Sigma-17 system) was destroyed by mysterious attackers, thought to be the mysterious terrorist organization known as the Order. At this point the player has no ship and 500 credits, as Trent invested the rest of his money in a deal with Sam Lonnigan, a Samura representative who promised one million credits for one ton of Boron. Lonnigan was rescued from the station but sustained critical injury, and Trent wishes to remain in Liberty until such time that Lonnigan is in fit state to continue business.

The single player missions continue from there, and in themselves are great, but the true potential of Freelancer isn't seen until you decide to brave the online mode. The missions you can get are so much enhanced by being in a group... as with any other MMORPG. Obviously, it's nowhere near as popular as stuff like WoW, but I still love it. If only uni still allowed me to access the servers

Anyone else play?

Re: Freelancer (2003)

Freelancer was a single player game.

Or at least that's what I remember playing it as.

It was from the people that made the Wing Commander games and was more or less Privateer under another name.

I loved it. The mouse control was ace.

I always wanted to try the online MMO game EVE which is kinda Elite/Freelancer style.

Re: Freelancer (2003)

Yes, EVE is quite a bit like Freelancer, apparently.

Actually, maybe this should be moved to just PC Games... I dunno.
