Alienware
Anyone have an alienware PC they use? Whats your comments on it?
I have a 7 year old pc that was rebuilt about 3 years ago, it can decently play recent games, but could use an upgrade. Think custom built is the way to go, or is alienware the way to go? |

Alienware is just a custom built PC vendor, Dell bought it not too long ago and you can go and order a PC from them (they are geared towards gaming). There's nothing special about them other than the cases (which are sort of nice and people pay money for the cases on ebay). The parts are all stock and they are more expensive than if you just bought the parts and put them together yourself. If you can I suggest going to Newegg and buying the parts and putting it together, it's not too hard and even if you have no idea what you're doing it'll take about 20 minutes of reading manuals to get everything going and it'll save you 25% on your costs.

Tanget is right, you do pay a lot for the Alienware name. If you take your time and find some deals, you can save a lot of money (I'd argue on 25%. If you're buying online from multiple retailers, shipping will nail you so you're only saving 10%).
They do have great warranties though, and although I'd never by one, I know a few well-off friends that have bought some Alienwares and don't regret it at all.

The arguments can be made about their systems being overpriced, but if it is within your budget, it becomes a moot argument. I've purchased several of their laptops; unfortunately I started building PC's before the advent of the custom gaming PC market, and so I've never used one of their desktops. From my experience they're a great company, although some consumers say they have a few support hiccups (but which company out there doesn't have a few themselves?) My one major issue was resolved quickly and professionally.
Just a few alternatives for you: VoodooPC, Falcon-Northwest, CyberPower PC and Ibuypower. All great companies with good systems that perform up to standard (and in some cases surpass) the Alienware products. And of course, a few of them are eesthetically different (which is my only real complaint about their company, they are the king of plastic design)

Yeah, I have an Alienware. I love my computer, but you can build one a lot cheaper. I'm still upgrading parts as I go though trying to keep it up to date as much as I can with a budget.
