Requirements for Playing Imported Games on the PS2

I was at an anime expo over the weekend, and I stumbled into a stand that was selling used and imported video games from (mainly) Japan. I am sure I am not the only person to check out the releases for the Playstation 2 only to be let down with the news that some of those titles will not be available in the States. That stand at AX got me a little interested in getting those titles.

I know that a person needed to mod their first playstation system to play burned and imported games, but I was wondering what requirements are needed---if any---to play imported games from Japan on an American version of the PS2?

There is a modification that you can find somewhere. Google it. I forgot what it's called.
