Creating games using BASIC
We learned BASIC back in 7th grade, I'm now 23 and at the time it seemed pointless but I realized it was good knowledge that makes me look smart so people might be impressed and I could possibly get a good job...and I can laugh at the Futurama joke when Calculon says, "Don't you have a GOTO 10 line?"
Anyway, does anyone still use BASIC? And what sort of games do you play? I found a website that had pages upon pages of programming, I lost the link but could find it again if anyone is interested... |

Re: Creating games using BASIC
I learned QBASIC, was that the same thing? Ah I have fond memories of simply designed multiple choice questions, random number generated guessing games, door choice based RPGs, cannon duels, and graphically challenged battleship warfare
![]() It's a "isn't that cool" skill rather than an essential. It can impress employers but C++ is a bit more useful these days! |

Re: Creating games using BASIC
I always wondered what C++ was...not the same as CSS code is it? I learned CSS by my many years of using the net, sort of selftaught I suppose. Knowing HTML helped...
BASIC seemed very complicated for me at first because I didn't get it, but as I made cool little programs it all made sense for me. It is a very neat little thing, just very tedious and requires a super old machine! We're talking big floppy disk kinds! |

C++ is the upgrade from Visual Basic, I think they've probably written a new language by now. I haven't really kept up with it.

If X = "Yes" GO TO Line 20
I remember taking a high school class and learned a semester's worth of Basic. I had a spiral notebook, which was filled with a lengthy text adventure game that I never finished. Prior to the class, I taught myself a little bit of it on the Atari 400 since it came with a disk that was exclusively for creating simple programs. The only problem was that I didn't have a nifty cassette Atari player that would save my progress so anything I had designed would be wiped clean when the system was turned off.

Re: Creating games using BASIC
Ah, gotcha. I don't think I've ever been exposed to C++ then...and how true, there is always something new. I do believe there is another type of code other than HTML and CSS now but I can't remember a thing about it...

Re: Creating games using BASIC
I'm not sure about BASIC, but QBASIC was DOS based, all you need is a DOS window (cmd.exe)

If you're talking BASIC though, it wouldn't matter because the computer you program it on can only use so much memory at a time haha...it's ancient! Like on Vh1 I love the 80s, the computers with the giant floppy disks that only had enough memory to save just one line at a time hahahaha |
