Re: RMT (real money trade) bad?

It is bad. Sorry. Gonna have to get on my soap box for this one.

First off, gold sellers can ruin an mmo's in game economy. During development, game designers take into account an in game economy. If they wanted a player to be able to buy gold, they would offer it themselves, not have some outside company do it. They don't do it because they understand by selling gold, it can cause an inflation on items sold in the markets in games because it makes the gold too readily accessible. Additionally, it removes the need to actually work for gear or vanity items, thereby completely nulifying the point of playing the game.

Imagine, you are a new player. You get through the tutorial, come into the main part of the game and see the cheapest item is 1,000,000 gold, but the monsters in your level range drop 10-50 gold each. It would take you weeks to get the million, especially if you can not afford to spend the real life cash on the gold. Would you bother playing such a game? Probably not. Vice Versa. You are a player in an mmorpg. You go buy all this gold with real cash. You easily pick up everything you want in the game. What's the point of playing now?

As for selling in game items for real life cash. Not only is it immoral, it is illegal. The player did not create the pixels in anyway shape or form, hence they do not have the legal right to sell them or profit off them in anyway, unless the game designers specifically state it is okay. The game designers own the pixles.

Lets look at it from another angle. Your friend loans you their Wii for an extended period of time. They haven't set an exact date that you have to return it. You could theoretically sell that game system, since your friend may or may not ever know you sold it. Is it immoral? YES! Is it illigal? YES! It is not your property to sell.

You can also look at it from a business stand point. You own a company. You sell a product that is amazing. Someone comes in steals your product and sells it. Wouldn't you be upset?

In the end, RMT is not an important component of online gaming. If anything, it is ruining online gaming.
